The 2002 CASARA Ontario provincial SAREX was hosted by CASARA Ottawa at the Rockcliffe Flying Club. This link takes you to the photo gallery on the RFC website which contains some photos of the activities at the SAREX.
This deployment was an example of true mobility, the ops centre was a couple of trees (to hold up the boards) and a picnic table or two. We set up in a camp ground in town and shuttled flight crews to the airfield from there. An added feature of this deployment was that the power was shut off in town to allow maintenance on the lines on the Sunday morning. This didn't stop the operation, we launched and managed flights running on battery power for the comms gear.
Several units participated in LAB spotter training flights out of North Bay. Four Ottawa Unit members were able to participate in the flights, for most it was the first time on the LAB.
This was bonus LAB spotter training session that was arranged in concert with events relating to the retirement of the LAB from service. This was one of, if not the, last CASARA spotter training missions to be flown on the CH113. Nineteen members of the Ottawa unit were able to participate.
The LAB flown on this mission was the last LAB in service in the CAF, CH11301, flown by the last and highest time LAB pilot in the CAF. This aircraft has now been handed over to the Canadian Aviation Museum to be added to their collection.
BARSAR in North Bay arranged to participate in a Ground SAREX with the OPP ERT in that area. CASARA Ottawa was invited to participate and one crew and aircraft went up to provide air support. Once in North Bay one member of the Ottawa crew joined the ground teams and was replaced on the air crew by a BAYSAR member.
This is a collection of photos from the LAB retirement weekend at Trenton. There were a number of CASARA members in attendance from various units. Members of Ottawa were able to fly in to Trenton for the event.
On July 27, 2004 the last Labrador to serve in the Canadian Forces was handed over to the Canadian Aviation Museum in a formal ceremony. A number of CASARA Ottawa members attended to see the last flight of CH11301.
424 requested support from CASARA Ottawa in the form of a target and casualties to help them with their training activities, both for flight crew and SAR Techs. We were able to provide some resources to put out a target, play victim and to help load it all back up at the end of the day. It was a successful day, but we do need to find some harder target locations for the future.
This is a collection of photos from various events over the years, not in any particular order.
